Apple’s new nano SIM card standard was recently approved by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute), which means that this design will be used in future handsets by the various mobile carriers and smartphone makers.
Apple are expected to launch the iPhone 5, their sixth generation iPhone around September or October of this year and they will probably use their new nano SIM card in their new iPhone.
According to a recent report by 9 to 5 Mac and the FT, a number of European carriers have already started to stock up on these new nano SIM cards, in anticipation of the launch of the new iPhone 5.
The carriers are obviously looking to avoid the situation they had previously with the launch of the iPhone 4 which were some of the first devices to come with a micro SIM card, many of the European carriers didn’t have enough of the SIM cards in stock when the device was launched.
