Apple has been trying to get its new Nano SIM card design approved to be used as the industry standard, whilst companies like Nokia and RIM and Motorola have been trying to get an alternative design approved.
Now it would appear that Apple’s design has been accepted and will be used for the new Nano SIM card for future smartphones, the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, and Apple’s design has been approved and will be used going forward.
As you can imagine, Nokia and the other manufacturers are less then please about Apple’s design being used for the industry standard for Nano SIM cards, Nokia had the following to say about it.
“Nokia continues to believe that the selected nano-SIM proposal is technically inferior and not suitable for a number of applications, but the ETSI Smart Card Platform Technical Committee has now made its decision,” a Nokia spokesman said. “Nokia believes that the existing micro-SIM (3FF) will continue to be a preferred option for many manufacturers and devices and so ultimately the market will decide whether 4FF is widely adopted.”
