We have already seen a few videos of Apple’s Siri running on various iOS 5 devices, and changes to Siri in the latest version of Apple’s iOS now mean that Siri can be ported to iOS devices without any sort of piracy.
Developers Chpwn and Ryan Petrich have developed a port of Siri for jailbroken iOS 5 devices, which is called Spire, and it will work on any jailbroken devices running iOS 5.
Spire is my (along with Ryan Petrich) new tool for installing Siri on previously unsupported, but jailbroken, devices. Spire is a small download, but while installing it will download Siri itself (directly from Apple). Spire is available in Cydia right now — go get it! This will use about 100 MB of data, so please connect to Wi-Fi before installing.
How Spire Works
Spire is designed to be a simple and efficient way to bring Siri to older iOS devices that Apple did not originally support. The tool itself is a relatively small download, but it cleverly fetches the necessary Siri files directly from Apple’s servers during installation. This ensures that users are getting the authentic Siri experience without resorting to pirated software. The process of downloading Siri files uses about 100 MB of data, so it is recommended to connect to Wi-Fi to avoid excessive data charges.
Legal and Technical Considerations
One of the most significant aspects of Spire is its legality. Unlike previous methods that involved pirated copies of Siri, Spire operates within legal boundaries by downloading the necessary files directly from Apple. This is a crucial development for the jailbreaking community, as it allows users to enhance their devices without violating any laws.
Technically, Spire requires a jailbroken device running iOS 5. Jailbreaking is a process that removes software restrictions imposed by Apple, allowing users to install third-party applications and tweaks not available through the official App Store. While jailbreaking itself is legal in many countries, it does void the device’s warranty and can potentially expose the device to security risks.
To install Spire, users need to have Cydia, the unofficial app store for jailbroken devices. Once Spire is installed, users will need to configure a proxy server to handle Siri requests. This is because Siri requires authentication with Apple’s servers, and the proxy server acts as an intermediary to facilitate this communication.
