Apple’s [AAPL] iPhone 4 went on sale yesterday, many iPhone 4 owners have reported a problem with cellular signals when the iPhone is held in a certain way, if you hold your iPhone in the lower left hand corner, covering the antenna the signal can drop.
We have tested this on our iPhone 4 and have yet to experience the problem, although the problem seems to be quite common with hundreds of iPhone 4 owners confirming they have experienced the problem.
Here is Apple’s official response to the reception issues on the iPhone 4.
‘Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.’
The iPhone 4 features two different antennas that are built into the steel band on the outside of the iPhone, the one on the left is for WiFi and Bluetooth and the one on the right is for cellular reception, the way to avoid the problem is to avoid holding the iPhone 4 on the lower left hand side.
