Users of smartphones and tablets running Google’s Android OS could be subjected to a new type of ransomware, called Simplocker.
This new Malware was discovered by Robert Lipovsky, and what is does in encrypt your photos, videos, documents and other information stored on your device, it then asks for a ransom to unlock the files.
At the moment the Simplocker Malware only appears to be targeting Android users in Europe, when a device has the Malware installed, it display a message in Russian, and you can see a translated version of what appears on a device below.
WARNING your phone is locked!
The device is locked for viewing and distribution child pornography , zoophilia and other perversions.
To unlock you need to pay 260 UAH.
1. Locate the nearest payment kiosk.
2. Select MoneXy
3. Enter {REDACTED}.
4. Make deposit of 260 Hryvnia, and then press pay.
Do not forget to take a receipt!
After payment your device will be unlocked within 24 hours.
In case of no PAYMENT YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA ON your device!”
The Simplocker Malware scans the SD card on Android smartphones and tablets for specific files, when these files are found, they are encrypted and you no longer have access to them.
It then directs the owner of the device to a payment system and asks for a payment of roughly $21 US. it also sends information about your handset to the hackers like the IMEI number and other information. You can find out more information over at We Live Security.
