Apps that are submitted to Google Play do not need approval, and anyone can upload an app for a smartphone or tablet to the Google Play Store, things will be a little different for Android TV apps.
Google has confirmed that Android TV applications will be screened by Google and also approved before they are released on the Google Play Store, this was confirmed in some recent documentation from Google’s developer website.
Before distributing apps to the Play Store on Android TV devices, our team reviews apps for usability with a DPAD (apps) and Gamepad (games only) and other quality guidelines.
This is something new for Google, as the company has not screened any Android applications previously, although at the moment it appears that apps will only be screened for their new Android TV platform.
Google’s previous TV platform, Google TV did not need approval for applications, the platform did not really take off, we suspect that Google are looking to ensure that only quality and worthwhile applications make it to their new Android TV platform.
There are no details as yet on whether Google intends to change anything for Android and Android Wear apps, and whether at some point in the future , Google will decide that these applications may need approval as well.
