Fans of the Toyota 86 are always on the lookout for a new version of the car. Many of those fans are hoping a new version will turn up that gives the car more power, but sadly that never happens. It certainly hasn’t happened with the 2019 86 TRD Special Edition. Toyota calls it the “Ultimate Performance” 86 but it has the same 2.0L 205hp Boxer engine.
Performance Enhancements
What the special edition does get are Brembo brakes, SACHS dampers, TRD Body Kit, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, special design details, and a TRD exhaust. These enhancements are aimed at improving the car’s handling, braking, and overall driving dynamics. The Brembo brakes, for instance, offer superior stopping power, which is crucial for spirited driving. The SACHS dampers provide a more refined ride quality, balancing comfort and performance. The TRD Body Kit not only adds an aggressive look but also improves aerodynamics, helping the car stick to the road better.
Buyers can option the car with heated outside mirrors, keyless entry with push-button start, matte black rear wing, dual-zone AC, and other tidbits. These features add a layer of modern convenience and comfort, making the car more enjoyable for daily driving. The heated mirrors are particularly useful in colder climates, while the keyless entry and push-button start add a touch of modernity to the driving experience.
Transmission and Interior
You can get the car with a 6-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual transmission is often the choice for purists who want the most engaging driving experience. It allows for more control over the car’s power delivery and can make the driving experience more rewarding. On the other hand, the six-speed automatic offers convenience, especially in heavy traffic conditions, and comes with paddle shifters for those who still want some level of manual control.
A new exterior color called Neptune and a red/black interior are now available. The Neptune color is a striking blue that adds a fresh, modern look to the car. The red/black interior features suede-like trim, which not only looks cool but also adds a touch of luxury. The interior design is driver-focused, with all controls easily accessible and a layout that emphasizes the car’s sporty nature.
The car will be limited to 1,418 units made and it will sell for $32,420 with availability set for August. This limited production run makes the 2019 86 TRD Special Edition a collector’s item. The price point is competitive, considering the performance enhancements and additional features. The exclusivity of the model is likely to attract enthusiasts who want something unique and special.
The interior certainly looks cool with suede-like trim abounding. It’s too bad this special version didn’t come packing about 250hp. While the 205hp Boxer engine is adequate for most driving situations, many fans were hoping for a power boost to make the car even more exciting. A 250hp version would have made the 86 TRD Special Edition a true performance car, capable of competing with more powerful rivals.
The 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition offers a range of enhancements that improve its performance, handling, and overall driving experience. While it may not have the power boost that many fans were hoping for, it still stands out as a well-rounded sports car with a unique blend of features and exclusivity. For those who value handling and driving dynamics over outright power, the 86 TRD Special Edition is a compelling choice.
