How To Jailbreak Your iPhone With Blackra1n
Yesterday we wrote about the latest iPhone Jailbreak tool from Geohot for Windows that will jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, Blackra1n.
I thought it would be useful to our readers if we put together a short guide on how to use Blackra1n to Jailbreak your iPhone.

First off if you want your iPhone to be unlocked to use with another carrier, don’t upgrade to 3.1.2 and do not use Blackra1n to jailbreak your iPhone as you wont be able to unlock it from your carrier.
The first thing you will need to do is download the Blackra1n.exe file, this can be downloaded from the Blackra1n website link below.
Download Blackra1n iPhone 3.1.2 Jailbreak
One you have downloaded Blackra1n connect your iPhone to your PC and click on the Blackra1n.exe icon, next click ‘make it rain’.

Blackra1n will start running, and your iPhone will then enter recovery mode.

Once it is done your iPhone will reboot and you will now have a blackra1n icon on your iPhone home screen, when you launch the icon you will get a menu which will show you an available list of installers including, Cydia, Rock and Icy.

This is bar far the easiest iPhone jailbreak we have used to date, head on over to Blackra1n for more details and to download the app.
I tested Blackra1n on an iPhone 2G and 3G, both of which were running 3.1.2 and the jailbreak worked perfectly on both without any problems.

2 questions.
- Is this reversible if there is a problem?
- Does it work on the 3gs w/AT&T OS ver. 3.1.2?

Hi Aaron
It can be reversed if you do a complete restore your iPhone from an iPhone backup in iTunes, you will need to erase your iPhone from the settings menu first, make sure you back it up before you use it.
It should work on the 3GS although we have only tested it on the 2G and 3G running 3.1.2 so far.
I hope this helps.

My iPhone is currently at 3.0 as 3.1 came out then 3.1.2 quickly and I decided to wait. What’s the procedure in that case? I have no interest in unlocking, I just want a jailbroken 3.1.2 iPhone. Do I need to upgrade first and then run blackra1n?

@SpoonmanWoS: I had the same scenario as you. Blackra1n will only jailbreak the 3.1.2 OS, so yes, you do have to upgrade first. I upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1.2 on my 3G and it worked flawlessly.
However, unlike most others, I haven’t been as lucky with blackra1n. I had to do a factory recovery 3 times after blackra1n hung each time until I gave up. I ran blackra1n on Windows Vista, and I tried running it in admin mode and with Windows XP compatibility set. Every time blackra1n got to the “starting recovery mode” screen and the phone displayed the “connect to itunes” graphic, and it got stuck there indefinitely until I unplugged.
I’m currently stuck with the stock 3.1.2 kernel until I work up the courage to try jailbreaking again or if anyone has advice as to what I can try differently.

blackra1n doesn’t work. I tried it on 6 phones with no luck. It just hangs when it gets to the “running” part. It even bricked one phone.

I updated my jailbroken 3.1 to 3.1.2 just to use this. It screwed up my 3g iPhone for good. Don’t use it.

I used this with 3.1 firmware on a 3G without any trouble. I have been using the Intelliscreen APp from RockYourPhone and have had to use blackra1n to use it with my new firmware. WOrked like a charm.

You could try a full restore and try it again, I have used it on the 2G and it worked.

November 20th, 2009 at 7:37 am
hey i have a ipod touch 3g i bought it on Nov. 10 2009 so its brand new. im deciding if i wanna jailbreak now or later. but i have some questions:
1. is this reversible on the touch 3g, so that the warranty could be used, or can apple find out if i had done this?
2. what are the perks of jailbreaking?
if someone could answer these i would greatly appreciate it, thanks alot

Hi Mike
If you jailbreak your iPod or iPhone you can return it to its orignal state by doing a full restore via iTunes, which will wipe everything from it and the restore it from you last backup.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:57 am
so its basically perfectly safe and wont affect ipod warranty if needed to use? (provided that ipod is restored)

Hi Mike
It should be ok, although I cant guarantee it.
