Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace has hit a new milestone. According to a recent report, there are now more than 50,000 apps available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.
According to All About Windows Phone, 17,276 apps have been added to the marketplace in the last 90 days, and a total of 8,010 apps have been added in the last 30 days.
It took Microsoft just over a year to reach the 40,000 apps milestone, and just 40 days to add the last 10,000 apps, which shows that the Windows Phone Marketplace is growing steadily.
Comparing Growth with Competitors
Microsoft is still a long way off both Apple’s iOS App Store and Google Play Store, but the rapid growth in the number of apps is a positive sign. For comparison, Apple’s App Store, which launched in 2008, reached 50,000 apps in about a year, while the Google Play Store, which launched in 2008 as well, took slightly longer to hit the same milestone. Despite the head start of its competitors, the Windows Phone Marketplace’s recent growth rate is impressive.
The growth can be attributed to several factors, including the increasing popularity of Windows Phone devices, such as the Nokia Lumia series. The Lumia 800, for example, has been well-received for its sleek design and robust performance, contributing to the platform’s growing user base.
Developer Incentives and Future Prospects
Microsoft has also been actively encouraging developers to create apps for the Windows Phone platform. Initiatives like the AppCampus program, a joint venture between Microsoft, Nokia, and Aalto University, have provided funding and support to developers, resulting in a surge of new apps. Additionally, Microsoft’s integration of Windows Phone with other popular services like Xbox Live and Office 365 has made the platform more attractive to both developers and users.
The future looks promising for the Windows Phone Marketplace. With the upcoming release of new devices and updates to the Windows Phone operating system, the number of apps is expected to continue growing. Microsoft is also focusing on improving the quality of apps available, ensuring that users have access to a wide range of high-quality applications.
While it may take some time for Microsoft to catch up with Apple and Google in terms of the sheer number of apps, the company is making significant strides. The steady growth of the Windows Phone Marketplace is a testament to Microsoft’s commitment to building a competitive app ecosystem.
