Microsoft has now released the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, and it is now available to download. The download is around 3GB in size, so it may take a little while to download it.
The Windows 8 Consumer Preview comes with a wide range of new features, including the new Windows Store, with Microsoft’s new Metro Style apps and much more.
With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft. “The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC.”
New Features in Windows 8 Consumer Preview
One of the most notable features of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is the introduction of the new Windows Store. This store is designed to be a one-stop shop for all your app needs, featuring a variety of Metro Style apps. These apps are optimized for touch interfaces but also work seamlessly with traditional mouse and keyboard setups. The Metro interface itself is a significant departure from previous versions of Windows, offering a more streamlined and visually engaging experience.
Another key feature is the enhanced Start Screen, which replaces the traditional Start Menu. The Start Screen is highly customizable, allowing users to pin their favorite apps, contacts, and websites for quick access. Live Tiles provide real-time updates, making it easier to stay informed without opening individual apps.
Enhanced Performance and Compatibility
Windows 8 Consumer Preview also brings significant improvements in performance and compatibility. The operating system is designed to boot up faster and run more efficiently, even on older hardware. This is achieved through various optimizations, including better memory management and reduced system resource usage.
Moreover, Windows 8 is built to be compatible with a wide range of devices, from tablets and laptops to desktops and all-in-one PCs. This versatility ensures that users can enjoy a consistent experience across different types of hardware. The Consumer Preview also includes support for ARM-based processors, which are commonly used in tablets and other mobile devices. This broad compatibility is a testament to Microsoft’s commitment to creating a versatile and future-proof operating system.
Security has also been a major focus in Windows 8. The Consumer Preview includes features like Secure Boot, which helps protect against malware and unauthorized software. Windows Defender has been improved to offer better protection against viruses and other threats. Additionally, the new SmartScreen filter helps protect users from phishing attacks and malicious websites.
