Western Digital has unveiled a new addition to its VelociRaptor HDD range this week, in the form of a 1TB drive. The new Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB is the largest capacity 10,000 RPM drive currently on the market, and has seen and increase in storage space from 600GB to the massive 1TB.
The VelociRaptor range of HDD has been the fastest SATA hard drives available for some time, making them great for heavy-write endurance workloads. Western Digital explains:
“Creative pros use write-intensive applications that manage large, dynamic files; for example, video editing and digital content creation and management, which ultimately put a strain on storage devices that utilize write-challenged NAND memory for performance enhancement.”
The new Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB drive is basically the same in design as its smaller 600GB. However the new range of VelociRaptor drives is now available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities, priced at $160, $210 and $320 respectively.
The Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB comes supplied with a hefty heatsink or IcePack, which can be removed if desired, as the circuit board positioned at the front of the heasink is a connection adapter only and isn’t equipped with any controller chips.
