A hotel chain in the US, Starwood Hotels and Resorts is testing out a new system that will turn your iPhone into your room key for their hotels.

This new system was recently detailed by The WSJ, and the company is rolling out the system to Aloft Hotels in New York City and Silicon Valley.

Guests who are staying at the hotel can download a smartphone app to their iPhone before they arrive at the hotel, and the app can then be used to check in without the need to go to the front desk.

This enables guests to go direct to their room and then unlock it with their iPhone, the app will also be available for Google’s Android devices.

Aloft hotels, Starwood CEO Frits van Paasschen said “We believe this will become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel. It may be a novelty at first, but we think it will become table stakes for managing a hotel.”

The new check in and room key system is being tested as a pilot, and if it ends up being popular with the hotels guests it will be rolled out to the company’s other 123 hotels by the end of 2015.
