After logos for a Sony PSN Pass scheme were spotted on a hardware bundle packaging for the Insomniac shooter. Sony has been quick to confirm that yes there will be a “PSN Pass” program launching soon with games. Which has been created to “accelerate its commitment to enhancing premium online services in its first-party line-up”. Sony said in an interview with vg247 games website.
Very little is still know about exactly how the PSN Pass program is to be implemented but it could enable developers to charge extra for online gameplay and/or functionality within their games. Also second hand games sales could be affected as players that purchase a secondhand game with PSN Pass will then need to pay extra to play the game online.
Sony explains the PSN Pass program :
“This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
The new PSN Pass program will be arriving with the launch of the new Resistance 3 on September 6 in the US and September 9 in the UK for PS3.
