Slingbox has rolled out a new beta service called ‘SlingPlayer for Connected Devices’ which enables users to stream content from their Slingbox Solo or Slingbox PRO-HD to Google TV or devices using Google’s STBs such as the Logitech Revue.
SlingPlayer for Connected Devices is currently in development and doesn’t require any software upgrade or application to use, due to it being built as a Flash-based code specifically designed for the Google TV platforms. Watch a promotional video after the jump.
Key Features and Benefits
A great feature of the new SlingPlayer for Connected Devices is its ability to automatically test its connection speed to calculate what quality settings it should use for optimal performance. This ensures that users get the best possible viewing experience without having to manually adjust settings. The system is designed to adapt to varying internet speeds, providing a seamless streaming experience whether you are on a high-speed fiber connection or a more modest DSL line.
This together with Google developing a custom build of Chrome with 1080p HD Flash hardware-acceleration support ensures the system shouldn’t cause any lag when viewing. The hardware acceleration is particularly important for maintaining smooth playback of high-definition content, which can be quite demanding on system resources. This means that even older devices can handle HD streaming without stuttering or buffering issues.
Compatibility and Ease of Use
One of the standout aspects of SlingPlayer for Connected Devices is its broad compatibility. Since it is built on Flash-based code, it can run on any device that supports Google TV platforms. This includes not only the Logitech Revue but also a range of other set-top boxes and smart TVs that are compatible with Google TV. This makes it a versatile solution for users who have different types of devices in their homes.
Moreover, the fact that no additional software or application is required makes it incredibly user-friendly. Users can simply connect their Slingbox to their Google TV device and start streaming content immediately. This ease of use is a significant advantage for those who may not be tech-savvy or who prefer a straightforward setup process.
Another benefit is the ability to access your Slingbox content from multiple locations. Whether you’re in the living room, bedroom, or even away from home, you can stream your favorite shows and movies as long as you have a compatible device and an internet connection. This flexibility is ideal for families with multiple TVs or for individuals who travel frequently.
In conclusion, SlingPlayer for Connected Devices represents a significant step forward in the realm of home entertainment. By leveraging the power of Google TV and Flash-based technology, it offers a high-quality, flexible, and user-friendly streaming solution. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or just someone looking to enhance your viewing experience, this new service has a lot to offer.
