Skype has released the latest beta version of their VoIP software for Mac OS X, Skype 5.0 Beta, which comes with a range of new features and enhancements to Skype on the Mac.
Some of the new features in Skype 5.0 beta for Mac include group video calling, a new call control bar, Offline IM, and a floating contacts monitor. You can see a full list of the new features in Skype 5.0 beta for Mac below.
New Features and Enhancements
New call control bar — Hang up, mute, and more from a mini Skype toolbar that sits on top of any web pages, documents, or photos you’ve got open. This feature is designed to make multitasking easier, allowing users to control their calls without having to switch back to the Skype window.
Search chat content to easily navigate past conversations. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to find specific information from previous chats quickly. Whether it’s a shared link, an important date, or a piece of advice, the search function makes it easy to retrieve past messages.
Offline IM so that you can send and receive instant messages even if the recipient is offline. This ensures that your messages are delivered as soon as the recipient comes online, making communication more reliable and less dependent on both parties being online simultaneously.
Personalize contacts via user profiles. This feature allows users to add more details to their contacts, such as phone numbers, email addresses, and even custom notes. This can be particularly useful for users who have a large number of contacts and need to keep track of additional information.
Quickly rejoin calls if your Internet connection fails momentarily. This feature is a lifesaver for those who experience intermittent internet connectivity issues. Instead of having to restart the call, users can quickly rejoin, minimizing disruption.
Floating Contacts Monitor to see your online contacts and contact groups. This feature provides a quick and easy way to see who is online and available for a chat or call. The floating monitor can be positioned anywhere on the screen, making it convenient to keep an eye on your contacts while working on other tasks.
Group Video Calling
One of the standout features of Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac is the introduction of group video calling. This feature allows users to have video calls with multiple participants simultaneously. Group video calling is ideal for virtual meetings, family gatherings, and collaborative projects. It supports up to 10 participants, making it a versatile tool for both personal and professional use.
To use group video calling, simply start a video call with one contact and then add more participants to the call. The interface is designed to be intuitive, with participants’ video feeds displayed in a grid format. This ensures that everyone can see each other clearly, enhancing the sense of connection and collaboration.
