Russia is looking to build its own smartphone OS in an attempt to reduce dependance on technologies from companies like Apple and Google.
The news was announced by Russia’s minister of communications who has said that Russia will build their own smartphone OS, which is based on Jolla’s open source Sailfish OS.
Russia are looking to reduce their dependance of foreign technology which is around 95 percent at the moment and they want to reduce this to around 50 percent over the next 10 years.
Jolla released their first Sailfish OS smartphones back in 2013, the mobile operating system is open source, which means that Russia can use the platform to develop their own version of the software.
It will be interesting to see what happens, whether Russia will be capable of developing a smartphone OS that people want to use, remains to be seen.
