The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile processor was made official recently and now Qualcomm has released some more details about it.
The new Snapdragon 865 will be used in the 2020 flagships like the new Samsung Galaxy S11 and it provides 25% more performance than the Snapdragon 855, it also comes with improved efficiency.
“Snapdragon 865 supports the world’s most advanced 5G connectivity and features, raising the bar for what a mobile device should be,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “It’s the culmination of Qualcomm’s more than 30 years of wireless leadership and innovation.”
Unmatched 5G Connectivity
The World’s Most Advanced 5G Mobile Platform: The Snapdragon 865 is the most advanced 5G mobile platform—ever. Its Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System is the world’s first commercial modem-to-antenna 5G solution for consistent, lightning-fast speeds across the board—with peak speeds of up to 7.5 Gbps. This modem supports both mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G networks, ensuring that users can experience the fastest possible speeds regardless of their location. The integration of the X55 modem also means better power efficiency, which translates to longer battery life for 5G-enabled devices.
Enhanced AI Capabilities
The Snapdragon 865 also boasts significant improvements in AI performance. It features the 5th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, which delivers 15 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of AI performance. This is more than double the AI processing power of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 855. This enhanced AI capability allows for more sophisticated on-device AI applications, such as real-time language translation, advanced camera features, and improved voice assistants.
In addition to AI, the Snapdragon 865 includes the new Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, which is designed to handle complex AI computations more efficiently. This means that tasks like image recognition, natural language processing, and other AI-driven applications will run faster and more smoothly on devices powered by the Snapdragon 865.
Superior Camera and Multimedia Features
The Snapdragon 865 also brings significant advancements in camera technology. It supports the new Qualcomm Spectra 480 Image Signal Processor (ISP), which can process 2 gigapixels per second. This allows for features like 8K video recording, 200-megapixel photo capture, and improved low-light photography. The ISP also supports advanced computational photography techniques, such as multi-frame noise reduction and HDR video capture.
For gamers, the Snapdragon 865 includes the Qualcomm Adreno 650 GPU, which offers a 25% increase in graphics rendering performance compared to the Snapdragon 855. This GPU supports features like 144 Hz display refresh rates, HDR gaming, and desktop-level gaming experiences on mobile devices. The Snapdragon Elite Gaming suite of features also ensures that gamers get the best possible performance, with optimizations for smoother gameplay and reduced latency.
Security and Privacy Enhancements
Security is another area where the Snapdragon 865 excels. It includes the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit (SPU), which provides hardware-level security for sensitive data and transactions. This SPU supports features like secure boot, cryptographic key management, and biometric authentication, ensuring that user data is protected at all times.
The Snapdragon 865 also supports Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Max fingerprint sensor, which offers a larger scanning area and improved accuracy compared to previous generations. This means faster and more reliable fingerprint recognition, even in challenging conditions.
