Sony has today released a new firmware update for their new PS Vita handheld gaming console, with the rollout of firmware version 2.0 which has been designed to correct a number of issues experienced by users.
The new PS Vita 2.0 firmware brings with it a number of new tweaks and enhancements, including a new email client together with improvements to the device’s Internet browser.
New Email Client
The new email client on the PS Vita, simply called Email, offers a very basic email system for users. With automatic email setup for Gmail and Yahoo mail account holders, together with the ability to add multiple accounts. This makes it easier for users to manage their emails directly from their gaming console without needing to switch devices.
Settings within the new email program on the PS Vita enable users to set it to check for email every 15 minutes using the set up accounts. However, there are no features for push notifications at the present time. This means that while the email client is functional, it may not be as responsive as some users might prefer. Future updates may address this limitation, but for now, users will need to manually check their emails or wait for the scheduled checks.
Internet Browser Improvements
The firmware update also brings significant improvements to the PS Vita’s Internet browser. Users have reported faster loading times and a more stable browsing experience. The browser now supports more HTML5 elements, making it more compatible with modern websites. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for users who use their PS Vita for more than just gaming, allowing them to browse the web more efficiently.
Other new features within the firmware update include a redesign of the social networking app Near. Near has been revamped to offer a more intuitive user interface and better performance. This app allows users to discover other PS Vita players nearby, share game data, and even find new friends. The redesign aims to make these interactions smoother and more enjoyable.
Additionally, the firmware update includes performance tweaks and bug fixes throughout the system. These improvements are designed to enhance the overall user experience, making the PS Vita more reliable and enjoyable to use. For example, some users had reported issues with game crashes and system freezes, which this update aims to address.
