This week the creators of the new Overwatch game Blizzard Entertainment have announced that the new title will be the very first video game to support the Dolby Atmos audio technology via headphones.
The Dolby Atmos technology is normally associated with large cinema installations and allows listeners to enjoy audio that is capable of being moved around in three-dimensional space.
Senior sound designer, Scott Lawlor explains more:
When you play the game with it on and you can pinpoint the Pharah flying above your head, or the sniper up on the ledge. It adds to this fundamental goal of trying to play the game by sound.
Dolby explains more about its Dolby Atmos over on the official website :
Dolby Atmos transports you into the story with moving audio that flows all around you with breathtaking realism. Are you ready to move beyond traditional surround sound? Get the best possible audio experience at the movies, at home, or on the go. Sound moves around you in three-dimensional space, so you feel like you’re inside the action. Experience how Dolby Atmos transports you from the ordinary into the extraordinary Rather than being constrained to channels, sounds exist as individual entities that are precisely placed and moved in three-dimensional space. A new sensation of height immerses you in the action, creating a full audio atmosphere and realistically depicting objects moving overhead.
