Opera has just announced that they have submitted their Opera Mini application to Apple’s iPhone application store for approval, and according to the guys over at Opera the browser application is ‘fast like a rocket’, which could mean that the application is considerably faster than Apple’s built in Safari browser.
In the past when any sort of browser application has been submitted to the iPhone applications store, it has been turned down. Apple’s reasoning behind this is that those application have duplicated the functionality of applications already on the iPhone.
“The Opera Mini for iPhone sneak peek during MWC told us that we have something special,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “Opera has put every effort into creating a customized, stylized, feature-rich and highly responsive browser that masterfully combines iPhone capabilities with Opera’s renowned Web experience, and the result is a high performing browser for the iPhone.”
It will be interesting to see if Apple actually approves the Opera Mini browser application for the iPhone, if they do it could open the floodgates for a number of companies to release browser applications for the iPhone
It will be interesting to see how Apple plays this one, if they turn it down they are bound to come under criticism, if they approve it then we can expect to see many more browser style applications available for the iPhone.
