Nissan has a new concept truck that it is showing off at the 2018 Hannover Motor Show. The concept is the Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept. It is a collaboration between Nissan and the ESA and is designed to function as an astronomy lab. The vehicle has a trailer that houses an observatory-class telescope.
Nissan’s ProPilot driver assist technology is integrated. The telescope and truck help astronomers to conduct follow-up observations using dark sky locations that are away from lights of urban areas.
The vehicle is fitted with Nissan battery packs out of a LEAF for power needs when away from civilization. The telescope is a PlaneWave unit with a 40-centimeter primary mirror. It packs enough power to see detailed views of the rings of Saturn, nebulas, and other wonders. The truck and trailer use red lighting to avoid interfering with human vision.
