A new Raspberry Pi alternative has been made available this week in the form of the NanoPi K1 Plus mini PC which is priced at $35 similar to the Raspberry Pi 3 but offers twice the RAM and a slightly different CPU in the form of a Allwinner H5. Specifications for the new mini PC include a 1.3 GHz Allwinner H5 ARM processor with ARM Mali-450 hexa-core graphics supported by 2GB of RAM, together with a microSD card reader and the ability to use an optional eMMC module for storage.
Other features of the mini PC include an onboard microphone and an infrared receiver, and connectivity is provided by a Gigabit Ethernet, an HDMI 1.4 port offering support for 4K Ultra HD resolutions at 30fps or 1080p resolutions at 60fps together with the handy a 3.5mm audio jack, and 3 x USB 2.0 ports. The Liliputing website explains that “The Linux Sunxi community reports that initial support for the Allwinner H5 chipset was added to the Linux kernel starting in 2017, and FriendlyARM offers an Ubuntu Core-based operating system image for the NanoPi K1 Plus called FriendlyCore.”
