Microsoft has apparently made a new acquisition, Semantic Machines, an AI startup which will be used to improve Microsoft’s Cortana.
Semantic Machines was founded in 2014 and the company uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to make bots respond in a more natural way. This is something that Microsoft is looking to do with Cortana.
Enhancing Conversational AI
Microsoft will also use the technology to improve their Azure Bot service that is used by 300,000 developers. The acquisition of Semantic Machines is a strategic move to enhance the capabilities of conversational AI. By integrating Semantic Machines’ advanced AI technology, Microsoft aims to make interactions with Cortana more intuitive and human-like. This will not only benefit individual users but also businesses that rely on AI for customer service and other applications.
AI researchers have made great strides in recent years, but we are still at the beginning of teaching computers to understand the full context of human communication. Most of today’s bots and intelligent assistants respond to simple commands and queries, such as giving a weather report, playing a song or sharing a reminder, but aren’t able to understand meaning or carry on conversations. For rich and effective communication, intelligent assistants need to be able to have a natural dialogue instead of just responding to commands. We call this “conversational AI.”
Applications Beyond Cortana
The technology from Semantic Machines will not be limited to Cortana alone. Microsoft plans to integrate it into various other services and products. For instance, the Azure Bot Service, which is already a popular tool among developers, will see significant improvements. This service allows developers to create bots that can interact with users in a more sophisticated manner. With the new technology, these bots will be able to understand context better and provide more accurate and helpful responses.
Moreover, this acquisition could have implications for other Microsoft products like Office 365 and Dynamics 365. Imagine having an AI assistant in your email that can understand the context of your messages and help you draft replies, schedule meetings, or even sort your emails more efficiently. The possibilities are endless and could revolutionize the way we interact with technology on a daily basis.
Conversational AI is not just about understanding words; it’s about understanding intent and context. This requires a deep understanding of language, which is something Semantic Machines excels at. Their technology can analyze the nuances of human speech, making interactions with AI more natural and less robotic.
