MediaTek has this week unveiled a new range of smartphone biosensor hardware which takes the form of the Sensio module. This innovative module can be embedded into smartphones to easily add a range of user health tracking sensors and data capture technology. The MediaTek Sensio MT6381 is a 6-in-1 smartphone biosensor module which is expected to be made available to manufacturers early next year, sometime during 2018. The MediaTek Sensio MT6381 module measures about 6.8mm x 4.9mm x 1mm in size and requires a user to hold their finger to a light-sensitive sensor on the smartphone for roughly 60 seconds to take readings.
Comprehensive Health Tracking
The new Sensio biosensor for smartphones created by MediaTek is capable of tracking a variety of health metrics, making it a comprehensive tool for personal health monitoring. The Sensio module can measure:
– Heart rate
– Heart rate variability
– Blood pressure trends
– Peripheral Oxygen Saturation (SpO2)
– Electrocardiography (electrical activity from your heart)
– Photoplethysmography (changes in blood volume)
These measurements provide a holistic view of a user’s cardiovascular health. For instance, heart rate and heart rate variability are critical indicators of overall fitness and stress levels. Blood pressure trends can help in monitoring hypertension, while SpO2 levels are essential for assessing respiratory function. Electrocardiography and photoplethysmography offer insights into heart health and blood circulation, respectively.
Potential Applications and Benefits
The integration of the Sensio biosensor into smartphones opens up numerous possibilities for both consumers and healthcare providers. For consumers, having access to such detailed health data can empower them to make informed decisions about their lifestyle and health. For example, athletes can use the data to optimize their training regimes, while individuals with chronic conditions can monitor their health more closely.
Healthcare providers can also benefit from this technology. With patient consent, doctors can remotely monitor their patients’ vital signs, potentially reducing the need for frequent in-person visits. This can be particularly beneficial for elderly patients or those living in remote areas. Moreover, the data collected can be used for early detection of potential health issues, allowing for timely intervention.
The Sensio module’s compact size and ease of use make it an attractive option for smartphone manufacturers. By embedding this technology into their devices, manufacturers can offer added value to their customers, setting their products apart in a competitive market.
As soon as more details become available for the Sensio smartphone biosensor, we will keep you up-to-date as always.
