Makerbot has today released a new version of their desktop 3D printing software in the form of MakerBot Desktop 3.7. This latest update brings faster 3D printing together with improved profiles and a wealth of tweaks, enhancements, and bug fixes. The new version aims to enhance the user experience by providing more control and efficiency in the 3D printing process.
Innovative Layer Height Variation
One of the standout features in MakerBot Desktop 3.7 is the innovative approach to speeding up the printing process by varying the print layer height. Traditionally, 3D printing involves using a consistent layer height throughout the entire model. However, MakerBot has developed a method where different parts of your 3D printing model can have different layer heights. For example, the infill, which is the internal structure of the print, doesn’t need the same level of detail and polish as the exterior surface. By using a coarser layer height for the infill and a finer layer height for the exterior, the result is a faster 3D print without compromising the high-quality external finish.
This approach not only speeds up the printing process but also optimizes material usage, making it more efficient and cost-effective. It is particularly beneficial for large prints where the infill can take up a significant amount of time and material.
Custom Profile Editor
Another significant addition to MakerBot Desktop 3.7 is the Custom Profile Editor. This feature allows users to create and save custom settings for their 3D prints. MakerBot explains more about the new profile features in the software:
“Certain 3D prints need a little more TLC, and that can mean you‘ll want custom settings that may not apply to all your projects. That’s where the new Custom Profile Editor in MakerBot Desktop 3.7 comes into play. It allows you to edit properties of your print like infill and extruder speed, settings which can be saved as a template for future projects. Quick and Custom tabs let users of all levels create custom settings.”
The Custom Profile Editor is designed to cater to both novice and experienced users. The Quick tab provides a simplified interface for beginners, allowing them to make basic adjustments without getting overwhelmed by technical details. On the other hand, the Custom tab offers advanced users the flexibility to fine-tune various parameters such as layer height, print speed, and temperature settings. This level of customization ensures that users can achieve the best possible results for different types of prints, whether they are creating intricate models or large, functional parts.
Enhanced User Experience
In addition to the new features, MakerBot Desktop 3.7 includes a range of enhancements and bug fixes that improve the overall user experience. The software has been optimized for better performance, ensuring smoother operation and fewer crashes. The user interface has also been refined to make it more intuitive and user-friendly.
For example, the software now includes better support for different types of filaments, allowing users to easily switch between materials without having to manually adjust settings. This is particularly useful for users who work with a variety of filaments, such as PLA, ABS, and specialty materials like wood or metal composites.
Furthermore, MakerBot has improved the slicing algorithm, which is responsible for converting 3D models into printable layers. The new algorithm is faster and more accurate, resulting in better print quality and reduced print times.
