M2K 3D Printer

A new 3D printer has been launched by Kickstarter this week by Don McGuinness to provide a new learning aid for STEM technology as well as a way to learn more about 3D printing technology.

The package comes in the form of a 3D printer that is provided in kit form and can be assembled by anyone who wants to learn STEM Technology and comes complete with a five day course.

What’s the promotional video below to learn more about this new 3D printer learning package which has been created by a team based in Brisbane Australia and is currently looking to raise AU$10,000 to make the next jump into production.

The development team explain more about the project inspiration and goals, as well as the included educational training course.

The original idea was to develop a teaching aid, that could be assembled and disassembled and stored away again. By building and tuning a 3D printer, high school students learn the mechanical aptitude skills they need in various fields of engineering.

The 5 day course is designed to be a stepping stone to further reading and study in specific areas as required by the follower. If nothing else, it will acquaint you with the basic keywords and techniques used in STEM systems.
The following is an outline of the material covered and is delivered as a textbook.

Chapter 1    Assembly – Step by step guide including procedure for tensioning  and truing axis to be orthogonal to each other.
Chapter 2     Wiring – Checking voltages, on board flashing LED codes final checks.
Chapter 3    Install software  – Arduino IDE – Slic3r – Pronterface – Blender
Chapter 4     All about G-code
Chapter 5    Using Slic3r software to generate G-code automatically.
Chapter 6    Using Pronterface software to load G-code and control the printers actions.
Chapter 7     All about the firmware – Reading, altering and uploading.
Chapter 8    Physical maintenance – Lubrication, belt tensioning, bed levelling
Chapter 9    3D Printing tips and techniques. Do’s and don’ts.

The 2 Year High School Course includes the following chapters

Chapter 11   Learn the  basic electronic components of an electric circuit. Learn their symbols in a circuit diagram. Use a circuit diagram to construct a flashing LED circuit on an experimenter’s  breadboard.
Chapter 10    3D Modelling with Blender – With a focus purely on drawing precise models that can be used to print parts of an assembly.
Chapter 12   Printing patterns to make moulds from silicone rubber.
