Following on from today’s launch of the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite in the US, Amazon has also launched a new video explaining a little more about their new Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader and the technology they have included within the device.
Amazon’s team of engineers who have worked on the new Paperwhite device explain the technology that makes the Kindle Paperwhite display sharper and brighter than its rival e-book readers, yet still retains a useable battery life.
Innovative Frontlighting Technology
Amazon’s Rob Zenher, senior manager for display hardware, explains: “People have tried to do frontlighting on displays for years,” he says. “We spent a lot of time looking at how many LEDs to put in, how hard to drive them, how bright we could get it without impacting the battery life,” This innovative approach to frontlighting ensures that the Kindle Paperwhite provides a uniformly lit screen, which is crucial for reducing eye strain during long reading sessions. Unlike traditional backlit screens, the frontlighting technology directs light towards the display from above, mimicking the natural light and making it easier to read in various lighting conditions, whether you’re in a dimly lit room or outside in bright sunlight.
Technical Specifications and User Experience
To re-cap, the Kindle Paperwhite is equipped with a 6-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, offering 212 pixels per inch (PPI). This high resolution ensures that text appears crisp and clear, closely resembling the experience of reading printed paper. The device’s battery provides an impressive 8-week life with 30 minutes of use per day, thanks to the energy-efficient e-ink technology and optimized power management.
The Kindle Paperwhite also includes several features designed to enhance the user experience. For instance, it offers adjustable font sizes and styles, allowing users to customize their reading experience to suit their preferences. Additionally, the device supports a variety of e-book formats, including Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, and PRC natively, as well as HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP through conversion.
Another notable feature is the built-in dictionary and vocabulary builder, which helps readers improve their language skills by providing definitions and tracking new words. The Kindle Paperwhite also integrates seamlessly with Goodreads, allowing users to share their reading progress and recommendations with a community of book lovers.
The Kindle Paperwhite’s design is sleek and lightweight, making it easy to hold for extended periods. Its matte finish reduces glare, further enhancing readability. The device also includes a built-in Wi-Fi connection, enabling users to download books directly from the Kindle Store, which boasts a vast selection of titles across various genres.
The Kindle Paperwhite represents a significant advancement in e-book reader technology. Its innovative frontlighting, high-resolution display, and long battery life make it a standout choice for avid readers. Whether you’re a casual reader or a bibliophile, the Kindle Paperwhite offers a superior reading experience that is both comfortable and convenient.
