I loved Cool Runnings as a kid and, in a way, now it’s happening in real life. The Jamaican bobsled team has qualified for the Sochi Olympics, but they’re having a hard time affording the trip. The team is looking toward PayPal to raise the funds they need for the trip by asking for donations and selling a book on the team’s history.
According to The Telegraph, Winston Watts, one of major players behind the team’s success, has already put over $150,000 into the team and is calling their adventure “Cool Runnings, the Second Generation”. Jamaica’s Olympic Association has yet to financially support the team at all, but Watts is still hopeful they’ll step in to assist in time.
Jamaica’s bobsled team hasn’t made the Olympics since 2002. Before that they had made every Olympic competition since the events that inspired the movie in 1988. Winston Watts was part of the team for the last three Olympic runs before he retired. He came out of retirement and cut the team down to a two man crew because he didn’t want to see the team to end up unqualified and without a chance again.
Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s bobsled time!
