Check out this clever iPhone document scanner, which was made by Cincinnati design student Kyle A Koch, so that he could photograph documents easily with his iPhone.
The iPhone document scanner is made from cardboard, and it places the iPhone at the correct distance from the paper to photograph it.
When I got my iPhone last year I loved having everything important in one place, and the ability to get rid of unnecessary devices, documents, and information I kept with me. I would frequently snap photos of class assignments printed on copy paper so I wouldn’t have to worry about losing them. The documents normally came out pretty clear, but it was tough to keep still while taking the pictures. I set out to make something that would ensure clean, consistent pictures of documents taken with the iPhone that would be free and easy to make on your own.
Design and Functionality
The ingenuity behind Kyle’s design lies in its simplicity and accessibility. Constructed entirely from cardboard, this scanner is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly. The cardboard structure ensures that the iPhone is held at a fixed distance from the document, which is crucial for achieving clear and consistent photographs. This eliminates the common issue of shaky hands that can blur the image, ensuring that every shot is perfectly aligned and focused.
The design is straightforward: a base where the document is placed and a stand that holds the iPhone at the optimal height. This setup mimics the functionality of a traditional flatbed scanner but without the bulk and expense. The cardboard material also makes it lightweight and portable, so you can easily carry it around and set it up wherever you need to scan documents.
Practical Applications
This DIY scanner is particularly useful for students and professionals who need to digitize documents regularly. For instance, students can use it to capture notes, assignments, and textbooks, making it easier to organize and access study materials. Professionals can use it to scan receipts, contracts, and other important documents, reducing the need for physical storage and making it easier to share documents electronically.
Moreover, the scanner can be a lifesaver for those who work remotely or travel frequently. Instead of relying on bulky scanners or visiting copy shops, you can quickly set up this portable scanner and digitize documents on the go. This is especially useful for freelancers, consultants, and business travelers who need to manage paperwork efficiently.
