Google has released its new Instant Tethering feature for a number of their Pixel devices and also some of their older Nexus devices.
The Instant Tethering feature is now available on the Pixel, Pixel XL, the Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, and the Nexus 9. It will work on devices that are running Android 6.0 and above.
How Instant Tethering Works
You can automatically share a cellular data connection between certain Pixel and Nexus devices via Wi-Fi when they’re signed in to the same Google Account. For example, you can automatically connect your tablet to the Internet using your phone’s data connection.
Instant Tethering simplifies the process of sharing your phone’s data connection with other devices. When you enable this feature, your phone acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing other devices signed into the same Google Account to connect to the internet seamlessly. This is particularly useful for users who frequently need to connect their tablets or secondary devices to the internet while on the go.
Benefits and Use Cases
One of the primary benefits of Instant Tethering is its convenience. Instead of manually setting up a hotspot each time you need to share your data connection, Instant Tethering automates the process. This can save time and reduce the hassle, especially in situations where you need to get online quickly.
For instance, imagine you’re traveling and need to use your tablet to check emails or browse the web, but there’s no Wi-Fi available. With Instant Tethering, your tablet can automatically connect to your phone’s data connection without any additional setup. This feature is also beneficial in scenarios where you might be working remotely and need a reliable internet connection for multiple devices.
Additionally, Instant Tethering can help conserve battery life. Traditional tethering methods often require you to keep your phone’s hotspot active, which can drain the battery quickly. Instant Tethering, on the other hand, only activates the hotspot when a connected device needs internet access, thereby optimizing battery usage.
