With the release of Google Maps 5.1 today, Google has added a number of handy features to its Google Latitude service. These new features enhance the location tracking of users, transforming it from merely showing a location on the map to identifying a real place by checking in there using Latitude.
Enhanced Location Tracking
Google Latitude’s new check-in feature allows users to share their exact location with friends and family, making it easier for them to join you or know where you are. This is particularly useful for social gatherings, business meetings, or simply keeping loved ones informed about your whereabouts. For instance, if you’re trying out a new restaurant in Taipei, your friends can see exactly where you are and perhaps join you for a meal. Similarly, if you’re enjoying a latte at a nearby café, your family can know your exact spot without having to call or text you.
Moreover, because Latitude can automatically detect your location, Google has added extra features to streamline the check-in process. Watch the video explaining the new features after the jump.
Until today, sharing my location let friends and family know if I was across the globe or in their neighborhood. Now, check-ins let them see the cool restaurant I’m trying in Taipei or join me for a latte at the cafe nearby.
New Check-In Features
The new features include:
– Notifications: Turn on check-in notifications in Latitude’s settings and get a notification to check in at a nearby place once you arrive. This ensures you never forget to check in again, making it easier to keep your friends and family updated without any extra effort.
– Automatic check-ins: Choose to automatically check in at specific places you designate, and you’ll be checked in when you’re there. This feature is particularly useful for regular spots like your favorite café or gym. You can talk to friends or finish your bagel without fumbling with your phone, making the process seamless and convenient.
– Check out: Once you leave, Latitude knows to automatically check you out of places so friends aren’t left guessing if you’re still there. This feature helps maintain the accuracy of your location status, ensuring that your friends and family always have the most up-to-date information.
These features not only enhance the user experience but also add a layer of convenience and accuracy to location sharing. For example, if you’re attending a concert, Latitude can automatically check you in when you arrive and check you out when you leave, without you having to remember to do it manually.
In addition to these features, Google Latitude also integrates with other Google services, making it a comprehensive tool for location tracking and sharing. Whether you’re planning a trip, meeting friends, or just exploring new places, Google Latitude’s new features make it easier and more enjoyable.
