It has been rumoured for some time that Google has been working on a Cloud Storage service called Google Drive, which it has created to enable Google users to store their documents and files online, in a similar way to other services such as SugarSync and Dropbox.
Well now a Brazilian technology website called Gemind has been able to unlock hidden references to the service within Google Docs itself, and has even detailed steps to enable a “Download Google Drive” option within the Google website.
The option to enable is still only restricted to Google employees or users with the correct privileges at the moment. But it does look as though there are features that will allow you to download an application that will enable you to sync your entire Google Docs archive to a new Google Drive account or vice versa, when it is finally launched.
Features and Integration
Google Drive is expected to offer a range of features that will make it a strong competitor in the cloud storage market. Users will likely be able to store various types of files, including documents, photos, and videos. The integration with Google Docs suggests that users will be able to edit their documents directly within Google Drive, providing a seamless experience between storage and productivity tools. This could be particularly useful for businesses and educational institutions that rely heavily on Google’s suite of tools for collaboration and document management.
Moreover, the synchronization feature will allow users to keep their files updated across multiple devices. This means that a document edited on a smartphone will automatically reflect those changes when accessed from a laptop or tablet. This level of integration and convenience is something that users of services like Dropbox and SugarSync have come to expect, and Google Drive aims to meet and exceed these expectations.
Potential Impact and Future Developments
The introduction of Google Drive could have significant implications for the cloud storage market. Given Google’s extensive user base and the integration with other Google services, Google Drive could quickly become a preferred choice for many users. The service could also drive innovation and competition, prompting other cloud storage providers to enhance their offerings.
One area where Google Drive could stand out is in its potential for integration with other Google services like Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Calendar. Imagine being able to attach files directly from Google Drive into an email without having to download them first, or having your photos automatically backed up to Google Drive. These kinds of integrations could make Google Drive an indispensable tool for both personal and professional use.
Unfortunately, no information on pricing or worldwide availability has been released as yet, but as soon as information comes to light we will keep you updated as always. For full details on how to setup the Google Drive link jump over to the TNW website.
