Garmin has today announced a new addition to their range with the unveiling of their first outdoor GPS watch in the form of the new Garmin Fenix watch.
Garmin has designed their new Fenix watch to provide outdoor enthusiasts with comprehensive navigation and tracking features, together with trip information to guide them whilst off the beaten track.
Advanced Features for Outdoor Enthusiasts
The Garmin Fenix is equipped with ABC sensors (altimeter, barometer, and compass) to provide live data on headings, elevation, and weather changes, all enclosed in a rugged case with a scratch-resistant display. These sensors are crucial for outdoor activities, as they help users navigate through challenging terrains and unpredictable weather conditions. The altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, the barometer can predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure, and the 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you’re moving or not.
Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales explains:
“fenix packs Garmin’s leading and trusted outdoor technology into a robust, wrist-worn GPS watch that outdoorsmen can rely on,”-“Being able to go hands-free while still having access to Garmin’s precise and accurate information on weather, elevation, and position provides adventurers the confidence and peace of mind to take their outdoor activities even further off-trail.”
Additional Functionalities and Practical Applications
Beyond the core navigation features, the Garmin Fenix also includes a variety of other functionalities that make it an indispensable tool for outdoor enthusiasts. For instance, it supports multiple global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), including GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo, ensuring better tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone. This is particularly useful for mountaineers, hikers, and trail runners who often find themselves in remote areas where signal reception can be a challenge.
The watch also offers customizable data fields and activity profiles, allowing users to tailor the device to their specific needs. Whether you are a skier, a mountain biker, or a trail runner, you can set up the Fenix to display the most relevant information for your activity. Additionally, the watch includes a TracBack feature, which allows users to navigate back to their starting point along the same route they took to get to their current location. This feature is particularly useful for those who venture into unfamiliar territories.
Moreover, the Garmin Fenix is designed to be durable and long-lasting. It boasts a battery life of up to 50 hours in GPS mode, up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode, and up to 20 hours in UltraTrac mode, which conserves battery by recording track points and sensor data less frequently. This ensures that the watch can keep up with even the most extended outdoor adventures.
The Garmin Fenix outdoor watch will be arriving in stores during the fall of this year and will be retailing for around $400. This price point positions it competitively within the market, offering a robust set of features that cater to serious outdoor enthusiasts.
