Ford has announced that it has crammed a new AI system into the 2019 Edge and Edge ST AWD models. The AI is used to improve traction and fuel economy for drivers. The system works with Ford’s first all-wheel-drive disconnect that can change automatically between AWD and two-wheel drive in a fraction of a second.
The AI can determine when to change driving modes by pouring over sensor data on wheel slip, road conditions, vehicle speed, windshield wiper use, and outside temperature. The idea is to run in AWD only when required for conditions to help save fuel.
Ford also has several other efficiency tricks it is using in the Edge and Edge ST to improve fuel efficiency. Those include an 8-speed automatic transmission with dual overdrives, active transmission warm-up, deceleration fuel shutoff, and exhaust gas recirculation. Ford plans to have the 2019 Edge and Edge ST at dealers this month.
