You might remember Joey Roth, the designer of the ceramic speakers we featured here on Geeky Gadgets a while back. Well, he’s created another very unique design, this time with the ‘Felt Mouse’.
Roth has taken a softer approach to the traditionally hard mouse peripheral we all know and love by creating one from felt, providing a much more natural and pleasing finish to grasp. This innovative design not only challenges the conventional aesthetics of computer peripherals but also introduces a new tactile experience for users.
Design and Functionality
Underneath the soft felt cover, there is an optical mouse hiding and a hard flat surfaced base plate that is fitted with six running pads to provide the glide you would expect from any traditional mouse on the market today. The felt material offers a unique texture that contrasts sharply with the cold, hard plastic of most mice, making it a delight to hold and use. The felt also provides a warmer touch, which can be particularly comforting during long hours of computer use.
The design is not just about aesthetics; it also considers ergonomics. The soft felt can conform slightly to the shape of your hand, potentially reducing strain and making it more comfortable for prolonged use. This could be particularly beneficial for users who spend a lot of time on their computers, such as gamers, designers, and office workers.
From Concept to Reality
Also, don’t be fooled into thinking the Felt Mouse is just a conceptual design that will never make the jump to production. Roth is already considering the manufacturing stage and will be exhibiting on May 13th in the “USE ME” exhibit by the American Design Club, which coincides with this year’s ICFF show in New York. This exhibition is a significant platform for designers to showcase their innovative products and gain feedback from both industry professionals and potential consumers.
The potential for the Felt Mouse to enter the market is promising. With increasing interest in unique and ergonomic designs, this product could appeal to a niche market looking for something different from the standard plastic mouse. Additionally, the use of felt could open up possibilities for customization, such as different colors or patterns, making each mouse unique to its owner.
Moreover, the environmental impact of using felt, a more sustainable material compared to plastic, could attract eco-conscious consumers. As the tech industry continues to grapple with sustainability issues, products like the Felt Mouse could represent a step towards more environmentally friendly peripherals.
