BMW has plans to use carbon fiber in its vehicles beyond the likes of the BMW i8 and BMW i3, the company also uses the lightweight material in its M range of cars.
BMW is in partnership with SGL Group for producing carbon fiber for their vehicles, the two companies formed a company called SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers, and now BMW has announced that they are investing a further $200 million in the technology.
“With its highly automated carbon fiber production and stringent quality standards, Moses Lake is setting new standards in the industry. At present, the site is the world’s fastest growing carbon fiber producer. Together with the BMW Group, we are doing pioneering work to establish CFRP as a material in large-series automotive production. In a mix of materials, CFRP offers new opportunities in lightweight construction for an eco-friendly mobility,” explained Dr. Jürgen Köhler, CEO of SGL Group.
This new $200 million investment will triple the carbon fiber production at the plant, which currently produces 3,000 tons per year, this will be increased to 9,000 tons.
Many car companies are looking for ways to make their vehicles more efficient, and BMW obviously has plans to use carbon fiber in a wider range of their vehicles beyond the BMW Ii8, I3 and M series of cars.
