We didn’t pull any punches with the visual aesthetic or the handle construction, and there’s no way we’re stopping at the blade. We’ve used vacuum heat-treated VG10 stainless steel—a premium steel designed specifically for knife blades. This Japanese steel is some tough stuff and is known for its superior edge retention, ability to withstand rust, and sheer durability. The iQ’s blade comes with a flat grind, a sharp beveled edge, and a blade thickness that is suited for thin slicing. The first half of the blade (that is closer to the pivot) is straight for clean downward cuts and push cuts. The half of the blade towards the tip rounds out for a little bit of belly, which excels in rocking and slicing tasks. It is designed with a strong tip area and a lower point, which is excellent for scoring. Overall, the iQ shapes up to be a very controllable and extremely effective cutting blade.
While you’ll certainly love the iQ purely from its aesthetics, it will only be after your first flick of the blade that you’ll deem it to be your favorite knife. The tang of the VG10 blade protrudes from the spine of the handle and is used as a lever to flip out (flipper) the blade for easy one-handed operation. To ensure a crisp and satisfying flick, we’ve put a lot of time into perfecting the pivot area which utilizes caged bearings for some seriously smooth action. This construction also makes the pivot an easy task to maintain.
