BlackBerry is apparently suing Facebook for alleged patent infringement. The lawsuit is alleging that Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have allegedly infringed on some messaging patents that the company owns.
BlackBerry is looking for an injunction that if granted would shut down Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. The company is alleging that a total of seven different patents are being infringed.
BlackBerry is obviously looking for some sort of settlement from Facebook, the company released a statement, which you can see below.
“As a cybersecurity and embedded software leader, BlackBerry’s view is that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp could make great partners in our drive toward a securely connected future, and we continue to hold this door open to them. However, we have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies.”
Facebook also released a statement which you can see below.
“BlackBerry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, BlackBerry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.” said Paul Greal, Facebook’s deputy general counsel.
