Apple has introduced the next major version of their tvOS at WWDC 2018, Apple tvOS 12. The new software will bring a range of new features to the Apple TV, enhancing the user experience and providing more functionality.
The software will bring support for Dolby Atmos audio to the new Apple TV 4K plus a range of other features. Dolby Atmos is a revolutionary spatial audio technology that creates an immersive sound experience by allowing sound to move freely around the listener in a three-dimensional space. This means that viewers can enjoy a more lifelike and engaging audio experience, whether they are watching movies, TV shows, or playing games.
Enhanced Cinematic Experience
Apple TV 4K has been a hit since its debut last fall, offering customers the largest collection of 4K HDR movies, including free 4K HDR upgrades to previously purchased movies in customers’ iTunes libraries. This fall, iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies anywhere, and these titles will also include Dolby Atmos audio for free. With tvOS 12, Apple TV 4K will be the only streaming player both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified, delivering the highest quality cinematic experience of stunning 4K HDR visuals and immersive sound that flows all around in three-dimensional space.
In addition to Dolby Atmos support, tvOS 12 will also introduce new features such as Zero Sign-On, which simplifies the process of logging into apps. With Zero Sign-On, Apple TV will automatically detect the user’s broadband network and sign them into all the supported apps they receive through their subscription—no typing required. This feature will initially be available with Charter Spectrum and will expand to other providers in the future.
Additional Features and Improvements
Another exciting feature coming with tvOS 12 is the new Aerial screensavers. Apple has collaborated with the International Space Station National Lab and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space to deliver stunning new aerial screensavers shot from space. These screensavers provide breathtaking views of Earth, offering a unique and mesmerizing experience for users when their Apple TV is idle.
Furthermore, tvOS 12 will bring improvements to the Apple TV Remote app, making it easier to control your Apple TV from your iPhone or iPad. The app will now include support for Siri, allowing users to search for content, control playback, and even control HomeKit-enabled devices using voice commands.
Apple is also enhancing the security and privacy features of tvOS 12. The new software will include support for AutoFill passwords from iOS devices, making it easier and more secure to log into apps and services on Apple TV. Additionally, Apple is introducing new privacy controls that give users more control over their data and how it is used.
The new tvOS 12 will also support third-party remotes, allowing users to control their Apple TV with remotes from other manufacturers. This provides more flexibility and convenience for users who prefer to use a different remote control.
