Apple has today released the latest version of their new OS X Mavericks operating system which is currently under development and will hopefully be launching worldwide in the coming months.
Apple has now seeded the OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview 6 to developers which brings a number of minor enhancements and comes two weeks after the fifth Developer Preview brought iBooks functionality to OS X Mavericks.
New Features in OS X Mavericks
New features included in the latest OS X Mavericks operating system include iBooks access, Finder tabs, Maps, App Nap, and Compressed Memory, to name just a few. The iBooks feature allows users to access their entire library of books directly on their Mac, making it easier to read and manage books across all Apple devices. Finder tabs bring a more organized and streamlined way to manage files, similar to how tabs work in web browsers. Maps integration provides detailed maps and directions, which can be sent directly to an iPhone for on-the-go navigation. App Nap is a power-saving feature that reduces the energy consumption of apps that are not currently in use, thereby extending battery life. Compressed Memory helps to improve system performance by automatically compressing inactive data, freeing up more memory for active processes.
Background and Development
OS X Mavericks version 10.9 is the tenth major release of OS X, Apple’s desktop and server operating system for Mac systems. OS X Mavericks was announced earlier this year on June 10th, 2013 at Apple’s WWDC 2013 conference. The new name of the operating system marks the beginning of a change from big cats, moving to names based on places in California. Mavericks is a popular surfing location in Northern California, symbolizing the new wave of innovation and performance improvements that Apple aims to deliver with this release.
In addition to the headline features, OS X Mavericks includes a number of under-the-hood improvements designed to enhance the overall user experience. For instance, the new Timer Coalescing feature reduces CPU usage by grouping low-level operations together, which helps to save power and improve battery life. The Safari browser has also been updated with a new sidebar for bookmarks and shared links, as well as improved performance and energy efficiency.
Another notable addition is the enhanced support for multiple displays. Mavericks allows users to connect multiple monitors and use them independently, with each display having its own menu bar and dock. This is particularly useful for professionals who require a multi-monitor setup for their workflow.
