Proview recently expanded its lawsuit against Apple to the US, and now Apple’s appeal against the initial trademark ruling in China has kicked off at the Higher People’s Court of Guangzhou in China.
The court is expected to take a couple of months to make their ruling on the trademark case, which if Apple loses could end up costing them a large sum.
Apple’s lawyer in China told the court that ‘the value of iPad’s trademark rocketed after Apple launched the tablet computer in January 2010’ and ‘In the eyes of the consumer, iPad is associated with Apple. If the court decides that Proview wins the case, then this will confuse consumers and hurt their interests.’
If Apple does lose the case they will have to reach a settlement with Proview to continue using the iPad name, or they will have to change the name of the world’s most popular tablet.
