China Mobile is the world’s largest phone company in terms of the amount of subscribers it has, and now China Mobile’s Chairman Xi Guohua has announced at its recent shareholder meeting that the company is in talks with Apple to sell Apple’s iPhone.
Xi did not reveal how far along the discussions were with the two companies, although he did say that he can’t predict if the two companies will come to an agreement this year.

“China Mobile and Apple both have the will to strengthen cooperation,” Xi said. “When there is more specific news, we will disclose it.”
The Potential Impact of a China Mobile and Apple Partnership
China Mobile recently released information on how many mobile phone subscribers it has. At the end of March, the company had 667.2 million mobile phone subscribers. This staggering number highlights the potential market size that Apple could tap into if a deal is struck. Given that China Mobile is the largest mobile network operator in the world, a partnership with Apple could significantly boost iPhone sales in China, a market that is already crucial for Apple’s growth strategy.
If Apple and China Mobile did strike a deal for the company to carry the iPhone, we suspect that it would have quite an impact on the amount of iPhones Apple sells. The iPhone has been a popular device globally, but its penetration in China has been somewhat limited due to the lack of availability on China Mobile’s network. A partnership would not only increase sales but also enhance Apple’s brand presence in one of the world’s most lucrative markets.
Challenges and Opportunities
However, there are challenges that both companies need to address. One of the primary issues is the compatibility of the iPhone with China Mobile’s unique TD-SCDMA 3G network. Unlike other carriers, China Mobile uses a proprietary 3G standard, which means that Apple would need to develop a special version of the iPhone to ensure compatibility. This could involve significant investment in research and development.
On the other hand, the opportunities are immense. For China Mobile, offering the iPhone could help retain existing customers and attract new ones, especially in the high-end segment. For Apple, the partnership could lead to a substantial increase in market share in China. Moreover, it could pave the way for future collaborations on other products and services, such as the Apple Watch or Apple Music.
Another aspect to consider is the competitive landscape. Other major carriers in China, such as China Unicom and China Telecom, already offer the iPhone. A deal with China Mobile would level the playing field and could potentially lead to more competitive pricing and better service offerings for consumers.
“China Mobile and Apple both have the will to strengthen cooperation,” Xi said. “When there is more specific news, we will disclose it.”
In conclusion, while the discussions between China Mobile and Apple are still in the early stages, the potential benefits for both companies are clear. A successful partnership could revolutionize the smartphone market in China and set a precedent for future collaborations between Western tech giants and Chinese telecom operators. As Xi Guohua mentioned, both companies are keen to strengthen cooperation, and the industry will be watching closely for any updates.
