According to the NPD Group, smartphones which run Google’s Android OS have outsold the Apple iPhone for the first time becoming the number 2 selling smartphone OS for the last quarter in the US.
According to the research conducted by NPD Group, Android accounted for 28 percent of all smartphones sold, as opposed to 21 percent for Apple, but they were still behind RIM’s 36 percent.
The figures are based on the smartphones operating systems, and not by individual manufacturers, as Apple makes two smartphones, the iPhone 3G and 3GS which use their iPhone OS, whilst Android can be found on a wide variety of handsets from multiple manufacturers.
Last month it emerged that Apple were the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the US, beating Motorola in actual handset sales. Although Android seems to be gaining pace on Apple, I suspect it will still take some time until the catch them.
