Last week we heard a rumor that Amazon were working on their own smartphone to rival Apple’s iPhone, and now according to a recent report by the WSJ, Amazon’s are currently testing out their new smartphone.
According to the WSJ, the new smartphone is being tested with Amazon’s manufacturing partner, which we previously heard was Foxconn, and the device is expected to go into mass production either by the end of this year or early next year.
The device is reported to feature either a 4 or a 5 inch display, and it will probably run a modified version of Google’s Android OS, just like the Kindle Fire tablet.
Amazon’s Strategy in the Smartphone Market
Amazon’s entry into the smartphone market is a strategic move to expand its ecosystem. The company has already seen success with its Kindle Fire tablets, which run on a customized version of Android. By offering a smartphone, Amazon can further integrate its services, such as Amazon Prime, Kindle eBooks, and its vast array of shopping options, directly into the hands of consumers. This could potentially create a seamless experience for users who are already invested in the Amazon ecosystem.
Moreover, Amazon’s approach to pricing could be a game-changer. The Kindle Fire tablets were priced competitively, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers. If Amazon adopts a similar pricing strategy for its smartphone, it could attract a significant number of users who are looking for a cost-effective alternative to high-end smartphones like Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy series.
Potential Features and Innovations
While details about the smartphone’s specifications are still under wraps, there are several features and innovations that Amazon could potentially introduce. For instance, the device might come with deep integration of Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa. This would allow users to perform a variety of tasks using voice commands, from setting reminders to controlling smart home devices.
Another potential feature could be a robust e-commerce integration. Imagine a smartphone that allows you to scan products in real-time and compare prices on Amazon, or even make purchases directly through the device. This could revolutionize the way people shop and further entrench Amazon’s dominance in the e-commerce sector.
Additionally, Amazon could leverage its cloud services to offer unique features such as unlimited photo storage or seamless synchronization of data across multiple devices. This would not only add value to the smartphone but also encourage users to subscribe to Amazon’s cloud services.
It will be interesting to see what Amazon comes up with. We suspect the device will be priced competitively like the Kindle Fire tablet. As soon as we get some more information, we will let you guys know.
