Amazon recently launched their first smartphone, the Amazon Fire Phone, the company had high hopes for the device, although actual sales of the handset have been less impressive.
When the handset was launch it was available for $650 unlocked or $199 with a new two year contract with AT&T, Amazon has not dropped the price of the handset to just $199 unlocked.
Amazon wrote off $170 million on their new smartphone in their latest financial results, the company said that they had over commited on the device, and this new lower price is obviously an attempt to clear stock of the handset.
For $199 unlocked, the Amazon Fire Phone is not a bad deal, the handset comes with Amazon’s Fire OS which is based on Google’s Android OS.
The Amazon Fire Phone features a 4.7 inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, processing comes in the form of a quad core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, and there is also 2GB of RAM.
Other specifications in the handset include 32GB or 64GB of built in storage, the device also comes with front and rear facing cameras.
On the back of the Fire Phone is a 13 megapixel camera, on the front of the handset is a 2.1 megapixel camera, the device also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and 4G LTE.
The price drop on the Amazon Fire Phone is only in the US in the moment, Amazon UK are still showing the full retail price of £399 here in the UK, it is not clear as yet on whether it will be reduced in the UK as well.
