BMW has pulled the wraps off the all-new 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive sedans. The world debut of both versions of the M340i will happen this month at the LA Auto Show. Both will hit dealers next summer.
The cars both use an updated six-cylinder inline gas engine that makes 382hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The twin-scroll single turbo used has lighter internals to help boost build faster than on the outgoing models. BMW says the car will reach 60mph from a standstill in 4.2 seconds.
Performance and Engineering
BMW gives the car an M Sport rear differential, 8-speed Steptronic transmission with launch mode, and sport brakes and chassis tuning. The car also gets Auto Start Stop function with coasting function to save fuel. The car also has a dual pipe exhaust with an active flap that gives a unique sound in Sport or Sport+ mode.
The M Sport rear differential is designed to enhance traction and stability, particularly during dynamic driving. This feature ensures that power is distributed effectively to the wheels, providing better control and performance. The 8-speed Steptronic transmission is not just about speed; it also offers smooth and efficient gear changes, contributing to both performance and fuel efficiency.
The sport brakes are engineered to provide superior stopping power, which is crucial for a high-performance vehicle like the M340i. The chassis tuning has been optimized to offer a balance between comfort and agility, making the car suitable for both everyday driving and spirited driving sessions.
Advanced Technology and Features
The 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive are packed with advanced technology and features that enhance both driving pleasure and safety. One of the standout features is the Auto Start Stop function with coasting function. This system automatically shuts off the engine when the car is at a standstill, such as at traffic lights, and restarts it when the driver is ready to move again. The coasting function further improves fuel efficiency by decoupling the engine from the transmission when the driver lifts off the throttle, allowing the car to coast without engine braking.
The dual pipe exhaust system with an active flap is another highlight. This system not only improves exhaust flow and performance but also allows the driver to customize the exhaust sound. In Sport or Sport+ mode, the active flap opens to produce a more aggressive and sporty exhaust note, enhancing the driving experience.
Inside the cabin, the M340i and M340i xDrive offer a range of luxury and convenience features. The interior is designed with high-quality materials and finishes, providing a premium feel. The seats are supportive and comfortable, making long drives more enjoyable. The infotainment system is equipped with the latest technology, including a large touchscreen display, navigation, and smartphone integration.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety is a top priority for BMW, and the 2020 M340i and M340i xDrive come with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features. These include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. These systems work together to enhance safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
Adaptive cruise control maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, adjusting the speed as necessary. Lane departure warning alerts the driver if the car begins to drift out of its lane without signaling. Blind-spot monitoring helps detect vehicles in the car’s blind spots, providing visual and audible alerts. Automatic emergency braking can detect potential collisions and apply the brakes if the driver does not react in time.
The 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive are impressive additions to the BMW lineup. With their powerful engines, advanced technology, and comprehensive safety features, they offer a compelling combination of performance, luxury, and practicality. Whether you’re looking for a car that can handle daily commutes or one that can deliver an exhilarating driving experience, the M340i and M340i xDrive are worth considering.
