A new QuNeo, Multi-touch Open Source MIDI Pad Controller is looking to make the jump from concept to production and has started its journey very well over on the Kickstarter website. Having already passed its initially required $15,000 pledge sum by raising an impressive $88,764, with still 17 days to go, the QuNeo is generating significant interest and excitement in the music and tech communities.
The QuNeo multi-touch pad, roughly the size of an iPad, is a unique controller designed for electronic musicians, DJs, VJs, and DIY hackers. While it covers all of the functionality of other pad controllers, QuNeo adds the power of touch recognition in other dimensions. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

Innovative Features of the QuNeo
The QuNeo is a concept created by Keith McMillen Instruments (KMI), a private company based in Berkeley, CA, and is equipped with a range of innovative features that set it apart from other MIDI controllers on the market. These features include:
– 27 pads, sliders, and rotary sensors: These are pressure, velocity, and location sensitive, providing a highly responsive and versatile interface. Additionally, there are 17 switches that respond to how hard you press them, offering even more control options.
– 16 square pads: Each pad provides 127 levels of velocity response, X-Y location, and continuous pressure sensitivity. This means that each pad can detect not only how hard you hit it but also where you hit it and how much pressure you apply over time. This level of sensitivity and control is ideal for creating dynamic and expressive performances.
– 9 touch-sensitive sliders: These can be mapped to fader and effects controls, allowing for smooth and precise adjustments during live performances or studio sessions. The touch-sensitive nature of the sliders means that they can respond to the slightest touch, providing a tactile and intuitive interface.
Applications and Potential
The QuNeo’s advanced features make it suitable for a wide range of applications. For electronic musicians, the QuNeo offers a level of control and expressiveness that is hard to find in other MIDI controllers. DJs can use the QuNeo to trigger samples, control effects, and manipulate tracks in real-time, adding a new dimension to their performances. VJs can use the QuNeo to control visual effects and create dynamic, interactive visuals that respond to their touch.
DIY hackers and developers will also find the QuNeo to be a powerful tool. The open-source nature of the QuNeo means that users can customize and extend its functionality to suit their needs. Whether it’s creating custom mappings, developing new software integrations, or building entirely new applications, the QuNeo provides a flexible and powerful platform for innovation.
The success of the QuNeo’s Kickstarter campaign is a testament to the demand for innovative and versatile MIDI controllers. With its advanced features and open-source nature, the QuNeo has the potential to revolutionize the way musicians, DJs, VJs, and developers interact with their digital tools. As the QuNeo moves from concept to production, it will be exciting to see how it is adopted and used by the creative community.
