The Good Old Games (GOG.com) website has announced that it will soon be selling the Witcher 2 Digital Premium Edition as a PC download without any DRM attached. Managing Director Guillaume Rambourg explains that DRM is not a great way to protect games from piracy and thinks that DRM affects the gaming experience in a negative way.
GOG is able to provide the DRM-free version due to it being a sister company of CD Projekt RED, the development house behind The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
The Witcher 2 Digital Premium Edition is now available to pre-order from GOG for free, and pre-ordering doesn’t compel you to purchase it once officially released on the GOG site. However, it will provide you with a password to enter the UStream channel to watch a live Q&A with CD Projekt RED Senior Producer Tomasz Gop and GOG’s head of marketing & PR Trevor Longino.
Why DRM-Free Matters
Digital Rights Management (DRM) has long been a contentious issue in the gaming community. While intended to prevent piracy, DRM often ends up punishing legitimate customers with intrusive and restrictive measures. These can include always-online requirements, limited installations, and performance issues. By offering The Witcher 2 without DRM, GOG is making a bold statement about consumer rights and the importance of a seamless gaming experience.
Guillaume Rambourg elaborates, “We believe that gamers should own the games they purchase. DRM often treats customers as potential criminals, which is not the right approach. We trust our community and want to offer them the best possible experience.”
The Benefits of Pre-Ordering
Pre-ordering The Witcher 2 Digital Premium Edition from GOG comes with several perks. Not only do you get early access to the game, but you also receive a password to join an exclusive UStream channel. This channel will host a live Q&A session with CD Projekt RED Senior Producer Tomasz Gop and GOG’s head of marketing & PR Trevor Longino. This is a unique opportunity to gain insights into the game’s development and ask questions directly to the creators.
Additionally, pre-ordering from GOG often includes extra digital goodies such as soundtracks, wallpapers, and behind-the-scenes content. These bonuses add value to your purchase and enhance your overall gaming experience.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a highly anticipated sequel to the original Witcher game, which was praised for its deep narrative, complex characters, and rich world-building. The sequel promises to build on these strengths with improved graphics, more intricate storylines, and enhanced gameplay mechanics. By choosing to release it DRM-free, GOG and CD Projekt RED are ensuring that players can fully immerse themselves in this epic adventure without any unnecessary hindrances.
The decision to offer The Witcher 2 Digital Premium Edition without DRM is a significant move that highlights GOG’s commitment to consumer-friendly practices. It sets a positive example for the industry and offers gamers a more enjoyable and hassle-free experience. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or new to the world of The Witcher, this DRM-free release is an excellent opportunity to dive into one of the most acclaimed RPGs of recent years.
