Are you looking for a more original speaker system? If you are and have a little spare time this weekend, you might like to create your very own Toolbox BoomBox, which has been designed and built by Floyd Davis IV.
Floyd explained that he has equipped his Toolbox Boombox with a Pyle Pro stereo amplifier, together with speakers bought second hand from a thrift shop. The speakers are mounted onto a plywood sheet which has then been mounted into the toolbox with the amplifier. Check out the video after the jump to see the making of the Toolbox Boombox.

Materials and Tools Needed
To create your own Toolbox Boombox, you will need a few essential materials and tools. The primary components include a sturdy toolbox, a Pyle Pro stereo amplifier, and a pair of speakers. Floyd sourced his speakers from a thrift shop, which is a great way to find affordable and unique options. Additionally, you will need a plywood sheet to mount the speakers and amplifier securely within the toolbox.
Other tools and materials you might need include a drill, screws, a jigsaw, wire cutters, and soldering equipment. These tools will help you modify the toolbox and ensure that all components are securely attached and properly connected.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare the Toolbox: Start by cleaning the toolbox and removing any unnecessary parts or dividers. This will give you a clear space to work with and ensure that all components fit properly.
2. Cut the Plywood Sheet: Measure the interior dimensions of the toolbox and cut the plywood sheet to fit snugly inside. This sheet will serve as the mounting board for the speakers and amplifier.
3. Mount the Speakers: Position the speakers on the plywood sheet and mark the locations for the mounting holes. Use a drill to create the holes and secure the speakers with screws. Make sure the speakers are firmly attached to prevent any vibrations or movement.
4. Install the Amplifier: Place the Pyle Pro stereo amplifier on the plywood sheet and mark the mounting holes. Drill the holes and secure the amplifier with screws. Ensure that the amplifier is positioned in a way that allows easy access to the controls and connections.
5. Wire the Components: Connect the speakers to the amplifier using appropriate speaker wire. If necessary, use wire cutters and soldering equipment to create secure connections. Make sure to follow the amplifier’s wiring diagram to ensure proper functionality.
6. Test the System: Before finalizing the assembly, test the Toolbox Boombox to ensure that all components are working correctly. Connect a music source to the amplifier and play some audio to check the sound quality and volume.
7. Secure the Plywood Sheet: Once you are satisfied with the performance, secure the plywood sheet inside the toolbox using screws or adhesive. Make sure the sheet is firmly attached to prevent any movement during use.
8. Finishing Touches: Add any additional features or decorations to personalize your Toolbox Boombox. You can paint the toolbox, add decals, or install handles for easy transport.
Creating a Toolbox Boombox is a fun and rewarding DIY project that combines creativity with practical skills. Not only will you end up with a unique and functional speaker system, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you built it yourself. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or a beginner looking for a new challenge, this project is sure to provide hours of enjoyment and a great addition to your home workshop.
