THX have announced they are developing a new type of speaker system that will allow them to direct sound to certain areas of a room from one place, rather than arranging multiple speakers around the room.
The THX Steerable Line Array Speakers which is currently under development uses 60 metal dome tweeters and 32 3.5-inch drivers, with each driver equipped with its own dedicated 100-watt analog amplifier, creating 92 amplifiers with 100 watt’s each providing a whopping 9,200 watts of music power, oh yes!
The new THX Steerable Line Array speakers are capable of placing the sound anywhere in a room and maintaining the sound quality wherever the listeners are positioned in that room. It can also generate multiple “sweet spots” that can be very narrow or very wide, so a number of people in the room can have the same audio experience, regardless of their positions in the room.
Unfortunately no information on pricing or specifications have been released as yet by THX but as soon as it becomes available we will let you know. But with that sort of power I imagine they will be well out of my budget.
